HOCKEY ALBERTA ELIGIBILITY, REGISTRATION & MOVEMENT UPDATE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - FEBRUARY 3, 2025
RED DEER – In early December, Hockey Alberta shared a proposed regulation change that would allow first-time hockey registrants to register with the Minor Hockey Association (MHA) of their choice.
The change, which was officially confirmed on January 31, effectively removes the need for and use of existing MHA boundaries.
Any previously-registered player wishing to seek registration in a new association still needs to obtain written permission from their last registered association or access the existing player movement review process.
During December, Hockey Alberta solicited feedback through an online survey and also hosted town hall sessions to provide information and obtain additional feedback from Member organizations. Two additional focus groups were hosted in January with MHA Presidents and Registrars to better understand the challenges and impact this change could have on individual associations, and to identify supports and resources needed to best prepare for the upcoming season and beyond.
“The end of January was selected as the deadline to finalize changes to the provincial regulations to ensure we allowed our MHAs time to understand if, and what, changes are needed to their local registration processes in preparation for the 2025-2026 season”, commented Drew Dixon, Senior Manager, Membership with Hockey Alberta. “We know there is still work to do and we ask for patience from our Alberta families as our MHAs work through the necessary changes. Hockey Alberta will continue to work with our Member MHAs to support their change management processes.”
Member MHAs are being provided with an expanded Frequently Asked Questions document, additional registration resources, and templates that can support the messaging to their families and players. Hockey Alberta has also responded to the most frequently asked questions, via video, included here.
